Introduction

Managing user access in a multi-client, multi-role environment can be complex, and the stakes are high. Giving someone too much access could lead to data leakage or operational risk, while giving too little access can result in bottlenecks and frustrated teams. That’s why we’ve built a powerful Access Control List (ACL) & Permissions system into our platform: to give you total control over who can see and do what - safely, efficiently, and at scale.
Whether you’re managing a small team or an international wealth management operation with different business lines, our ACL system has been designed to meet your needs. Read on to explore what makes it so powerful, and how to get the most out of it.

What is ACL & Permissions?

Our ACL & Permissions system lets you define precise access rights across the Performativ platform. You can create roles with specific sets of permissions, then assign them to users based on their responsibilities. Whether it’s access to client data, portfolio management features, reporting tools, or trading functionality, you can fine-tune every aspect of what a user is allowed to see and do.
At its core, the system supports:

  • Role-based access for simplified setup and maintenance.
  • Entity-level permissions, letting you assign rights down to a specific client, portfolio, or segment.
  • Action-based permissions, controlling whether a user can view, edit, trade, approve, or just observe.

Use Cases in Practice

The versatility of our ACL system means it can adapt to a wide range of real-world scenarios. Here are just a few examples:

  • Advisors vs. Administrators: You can create an Advisor role with access only to their assigned clients, while Admins can manage system-wide configurations.
  • Compliance teams: Set up read-only access for compliance officers to review client data and audit logs without being able to modify anything.
  • Segmented operations: If your business operates in different regions or under multiple brands, use segments to isolate access for specific teams, allowing them to only interact with relevant clients and features.
  • External collaborators: Grant limited access to external partners or consultants on a need-to-know basis, keeping sensitive information protected.

How to Get Started

  1. Define Your Roles: Start by outlining the main types of users in your organization. Examples might include Advisors, Admins, Operations, Compliance, or External Auditors.
  2. Assign Permissions: For each role, assign the appropriate permissions. You can control everything from access to client data, ability to place trades, to visibility of sensitive reports or audit logs.
  3. Map Users to Roles and Segments: Once your roles are configured, map them to your actual users. You can also tie access to segments, ensuring users only interact with the clients or portfolios relevant to their area of work.
  4. Test and Review: As with any permissioning system, it’s crucial to test the setup. Use dummy accounts or impersonation to verify that each role sees only what it should.

Advanced Features

  • Multi-segment Support: Combine ACL with our Multi-Segment capability to support complex structures like regional offices, premium client tiers, or brand-specific teams.
  • Custom Rules & Exceptions: Apply exceptions at the user level if certain individuals require unique access beyond their role.
  • Audit Logs: Track access and permission changes over time to meet compliance standards and ensure accountability.
  • Scalable Setup: Easily manage dozens or hundreds of users through structured role templates and centralized configuration.

Why It Matters

Strong access control isn’t just about security, it’s about clarity, efficiency, and trust. Your teams need the right tools to do their jobs, but they also need to work within a structure that keeps your clients' data secure and your organization compliant. Our ACL & Permissions feature gives you that structure.
